A special one-day conference entitled Human flourishing through the eyes of faith and reason will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Blackfriars Hall, Oxford.
Speakers from a number of different academic disciplines will address central aspects of human flourishing, encouraging reflection on contributions of the various disciplines. Against a contemporary background of fragmented, partial, and competing discourses on the good life, the colloquium seeks a richer account of human well-being.
Providing opening remarks and speaker introductions will be the Very Reverend Dr. Richard Finn, OP, Regent of Studies. Topics for the daylong seminar include:
- Medicine and Human Health – Prof. Neil Scolding (Bristol)
- Neuroscience and the Human Mind – Prof. Jim Giordano (IPS & Center for Neurotechnology Studies, Washington)
- Psychology and the Human heart – Prof. Mark Williams (Oxford)
- Philosophy and the Moral Virtues – Prof. John Cottingham (Reading and Heythrop)
- Business and Markets – Mr. Michael Black (Blackfriars)
- Aesthetics and the Role of Beauty – Prof. Roger Scruton (IPS & Blackfriars)
- Theology and the Life of Grace – Rev. Vivian Boland, OP, PhD (Blackfriars)
This colloquium has been organized by Blackfriars in conjunction with the Institute for the Psychological Sciences, the Potomac Institute, and the Linacre Center for Medical Ethics.
