Andrew Sodergren
In 2011 I was blessed with the opportunity to deliver several invited presentations. The first was at the Catholic Psychotherapy Association (CPA) Conference in Denver, CO. I gave a 90-minute presentation entitled "Learning How to Love: Attachment as a Foundation for an Integrated Psychotherapy."
In the presentation I reviewed some of the research from my dissertation and extended it by discussing the growing literature on attachment and psychotherapy. In the past 10-15 years there has been incredible growth in scholarship on the clinical applications of attachment theory.
I was able to review some of that material and present it to the members of the CPA. In addition to being very enriching for me, the talk received a good deal of positive feedback from the participants as well. I hope to continue to study these issues and present on them in the future.
I was also invited to give a presentation at a bioethics symposium sponsored by the Integritas Institute of the University of Illinois-Chicago Newman Center. I chose a topic that is dear to my heart, one that I had written on in graduate school: miscarriage.
My title was "Caring after Miscarriage: Psychological, Ethical, and Pastoral Considerations." As with the CPA, the experience was very enriching for me and the talk was well-received. I hope to publish some articles on this topic in the near future.
There is a great need for people to integrate solid, psychological science with a Catholic anthropology. The more people engaged in this project the better, because the world is hungry for truth about what it means to be human.
I am thankful to God and to IPS for the opportunity to participate in this project, and I encourage others who feel similarly called to jump in.
Currently I am helping to establish a Catholic psychology practice with Ruah Woods, a Catholic ministry in Cincinnati, OH, dedicated to restoring the family and renewing the culture.
The future clinic will provide mental health services to the archdiocese and seminary, parishes, schools, and the broader community. I am grateful to Ruah Woods for the opportunity to continue serving Christ and His Church through my work as a psychologist. I look forward to assisting in their ministry of healing the culture.
